Ready or not, here comes the future of measurement. Here are four measurement tips—two are easy, two a bit more difficult—to prepare yourself to succeed:

  1. Read Nate Silver’s book “The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail–but Some Don’t.” You’ll understand everything you need to know about statistics.
  2. Master Excel pivot tables. Watch a video, take a course, find a friend, come to our annual one-day Measurement Base Camp, whatever. This basic data analysis skill is the key to the future of understanding your data.
  3. Understand data visualization. You won’t win the board room with words, you’ll need great data visualization. So master a visualization platform like Tableau, Microsoft’s Power BI, Qlik, or IBM Watson.
  4. Learn to speak a different (business) language. We’re not talking French or German, we’re talking the language of business: economics, finance, business administration, even HR. The communications star of the future will need to understand and work with all parts of their organization. And well, yes, Spanish or Chinese would be a plus as well.
