From the Desk Of Katie Delahaye Paine —
Welcome to the first issue of The Measurement Advisor, Paine Publishing’s newsletter for people who want to advance their knowledge of all things measurement. Whether you’re looking for news of the latest measurement standards, how-to guides on measuring your communications efforts, or advice on the best books to guide you on your measurement journey, you’ll find the answers in The Measurement Advisor.
Think of us as The Daily Beast of measurement. We’re constantly reading articles and scouring the web for interesting things about measurement, measurement standards, social media, public relations, and corporate communications. We weed out the drivel and the hype and bring you the rest. If someone is dead wrong in their research or their perspectives, we’ll tell you. If we like what they have to say, we’ll tell you that, too. If it is something you really need to read or watch, or a conference you need to attend, it will be in our “You must do this” section.
The core of our philosophy can be found in the Standards Central section of the Paine Publishing website, which contains everything you need to know about the current state of measurement standards, both for social media and traditional. We also cover standards in content marketing, digital advertising, marketing, and anything else that in some way shape or form might impact your measurement program.

No matter what techniques you might use—or philosophy you might have—about measurement, what we’ve learned in the last 20 years is that measurement is still about people. From the measurement newbie that is just trying to implement or use a new platform, to the CMO that demands all results be delivered in a one-page report, we all have the same foibles, fears, and baggage. So we’ve created a section we call Measurement Mavens where each month we’ll highlight those people who have somehow triumphed over all the complexity, technology, insecurity, authority, and occasional inanity to successfully implement their measurement programs. We’ll frequently ask our stars and others in the industry to comment on topics of the moment; this month they weigh in on standards.
We always want to bring you something concrete to take away, so we promise that in every issue, there will be at least one concrete how-to piece that will explain in detail the mechanics of measuring. This first issue that’s Breaking Bad Measurement: How to kick the AVE habit.
Conversations from the Corner Office is a regular feature that provides a perspective on measurement from members of the C-suite. This time we ask a former CEO who’s always been skeptical about the value of PR just what a CEO needs to make decisions.
Global Ruler is an occasional feature that brings you measurement news and developments from around the world. This month we bring you news from Italy, South Africa, Poland, Canada, and Germany.
We can’t promise to be as entertaining as Hannity or Colbert, but we’ll include our share of opinions, arguments, and scandals in our “For Good Measure” section, in which we ask the Measurati to sound off on new developments.
Measurement starts with consensus on clear measurable goals. So a big part of our “Best New Thing In the World” will be tools, examples, case histories, and instruction on how to get agreement on your goals, and define the metrics that you need.
So welcome to our first issue, good luck on your measurement and don’t forget to write. We want to hear from you, so if you have questions, ideas, or submissions, email us at measurementqueen@gmail.com.
Happy measuring,
Katie Paine
