Katie Delahaye Paine’s “Vital Signs — A Practical Guide to Measuring the Impact of Healthcare Communications” draws on three decades of measurement work and fifteen case studies from across the health ecosystem
[Durham, NH -September 24, 2026 — Paine Publishing today announced the release of Vital Signs — A Practical Guide to Measuring the Impact of Healthcare Communications, a new ebook by measurement pioneer Katie Delahaye Paine that gives hospital, pharma, biotech, payer and public health communicators a step-by-step framework for measuring whether their messages are actually landing.
Health communicators face a problem most industries don’t. Their audiences are emotionally invested, deeply skeptical, and one bad post away from a health decision that can’t be undone. Misinformation spreads faster in health than almost anywhere else, and the consequences run from a missed screening to a public health crisis. Yet most health communications teams are still reporting impressions and clip counts to leadership teams that have stopped reading.
Vital Signs is built around a seven-step measurement framework that works whether the goal is raising vaccination rates, launching a service line, recruiting for a clinical trial, or rebuilding trust after a crisis. It covers how to get leadership consensus on goals, how to define acceptable proxies for outcomes that can’t be measured directly, how to build a weighted “Kick Butt Index” for coverage quality, how to pick a benchmark that leadership already believes in, and how to keep a measurement program funded when budgets tighten.
“In health care it’s not enough to say “we posted it so someone saw it,” said Katie Delahaye Paine, CEO of Paine Publishing. “You have to prove that people heard you, believed you, and did something about it. That’s a measurement problem, and it’s solvable.”
The book closes with fifteen case studies drawn from Paine’s client work, spanning biopharma, health systems and providers, gene editing and genetic medicine, life science tools and instruments, and health insurers and payers. The cases include a global biopharmaceutical company that consolidated roughly $950,000 a year in redundant monitoring tools into a single communications governed dashboard. It also includes guidance on how to manage and measure a crisis and how to monitor for emerging issues.
